Last December, my mom’s dementia had progressed to the point where I could no longer care for her in my home. I had to make the difficult decision to admit her into a nursing home. She accepted it with grace and adjusted quickly. Cody had a more difficult time adjusting to her absence. He would search for her all over the house. Many times I would find him lying in front of her bedroom door, whining softly. He just couldn’t understand why she was no longer here. A few weeks later, I took Cody to the nursing home to visit my mom. He was unsure of his surroundings at first. He found wheelchairs and walkers to be alarming. Then he caught sight of my mom in her room. His ears perked up, his tail wagged wildly and he howled with excitement. She looked over and her face lit up like a Christmas tree. “Cody!” she said, “Oh Cody, I have missed you so much!” He jumped right up on her bed and I couldn’t resist snapping this photo.
